Unicorns of the Autonomous Digital Economy
UNICORNS OF THE AUTONOMOUS DIGITAL ECONOMY
In this week’s newsletter, we summarize our 13th bi-annual report on the unicorns driving the emergence of the Autonomous Digital Economy - now expanded to include over 750 unicorns from the Internet, AI/Agentic, and Blockchain domains.
We will present the full findings of our Autonomous Digital Economy Unicorns report during upcoming webinars:

We think you will find the contents important for your mid- and late-stage investing, and it will form the foundation for our own direct investment opportunities.
The Migration Toward an Autonomous Digital Economy
We are living through the migration towards an Autonomous Digital Economy (ADE) powered by the convergence of Internet, AI/Agentic, and Blockchain technologies which we believe will drive an unusual era of value and wealth creation. This transition is already reshaping private capital markets. The Internet digitalized communications and content. Now AI is enabling software to reason and standing up Agents which will be able to work and even act autonomously. In parallel, Blockchain infrastructure is enabling the digitalization of identity and trust and provides the solution to leveraging the Internet to move value digitally. Together, these technologies are creating a new generation of autonomous digital businesses and redefining how economic activity is created and exchanged.
Importantly, the ‘autonomous’ nature of the Autonomous Digital Economy does not imply that machines completely replace people. Rather, it reflects an economy in which both humans and AI agents can increasingly interact, transact and create value autonomously, with less dependence on traditional intermediaries.
An Remarkable Era of Value Creation
The scale of this transition is increasingly evident in capital markets. SpaceX's record-breaking IPO, together with the anticipated public listings of Anthropic and OpenAI, demonstrates the valuations investors are assigning to companies building the infrastructure of the Autonomous Digital Economy. However, these highly visible and much discussed companies are the tip of a veritable iceberg. Unbeknown to most, hundreds of other start-ups have seen enormous markups in their valuations over the last few years.
Overview of our Reports Findings
Fifth Era’s 13th Biannual Report finds the total number of Autonomous Digital Economy Unicorns Surges Past 750 With Combined Value Exceeding $8 Trillion:
The global unicorn count has increased from 1,300 at the start of 2026 according to CB insights, to likely more than 1,500 today.
The Fifth Era report finds 755 unicorns focused on building the Autonomous Digital Economy of which:
453 (60%) come from an AI/Agentic domain focus
133 (17%) from an Internet domain focus
169 (23%) with a Blockchain domain focus (including tokenized crypto projects)
The 755 unicorns have a combined market value of approximately $8 trillion

Analyzed by the location of their primary headquarters:
The United States has 439 (58%), China 46 (6%), UK 37 (5%) and all other countries 173 (31%). Note: Some unicorns are decentralized with a clear headquarters location.
From a digital cluster of innovation hub perspective, in the United States, the San Francisco Bay Area alone accounts for approximately 214 (28%) of US ADE companies and $ 3.49 trillion (42%) of total enterprise value.
New York is the second largest ADE cluster but far behind.

Key Implications for Investors
We believe the most salient implications for investors include:
Technology innovation is increasingly occurring in private rather than public markets.
Autonomous Digital Economy companies represent one of the largest concentrations of high-growth private businesses globally.
AI is driving today's acceleration in value creation, while the long-term opportunity lies in the convergence of Internet, AI/Agentic, and Blockchain technologies.
Understanding this convergence provides investors with a framework for identifying future market leaders before they become public companies.
We encourage investors who would like to discuss these implications to reach out to directly us at ir@fifthera.com.
